Dear VCDQ Team,

Couldn't find a fair topic for this suggestion, so I opened a new thread for it.
I think there is a little expansion needed in adding release function. 720p.H.264.Web-DLs by Kings, CtrlHD, NFHD etc., are all very good quality releases with full credits at the end of the show and without any logos on it.

What do you say?

Or should just upload these releases to an existing category?

Thanks for respond.

The problem is there's no "scene" standard for Web-DL's, the groups releasing these shows are releasing them as P2P outside of the scene - this makes it pretty hard and a bit random for us to pick them up and list them. If there was a reliable way for us to list those releases, we'd do it in a heartbeat. The difficulty of reliably tracking down non-scene stuff is why we only list P2P and Scene movies and all the other categories are Scene-only.

Hope that makes sense :)

I've only ever grabbed a couple myself. They required double the bandwidth but provided only a very marginal improvement in quality over a regular screen capture.

Same here but I've also had to grab em once in a while when the scene release is fucked (audio out of sync, improper coding, etc) or not complete (even with pars) so I hope they continue but I can see from Neversoft said about it being an issue tracking them to post here.

I've had mixed results with the quality, and more often not it wasn't for the better. I don't know if these rips come with their own encoding issues but generally they end up being pixelated/blurry/juddery when I get them.

While the so-called "New Media" rips and web downloads are out there, they still aren't prevalent and don't warrant a unique category. Because of this, as Neversoft pointed out, there are no standard set for these so they are hit and miss in quality and availability.

Wow, I'm surprised at the generally negative opinion of WEB-DL releases. I have found them to be at *least* comparable quality to the scene encodes, with the bonus that they don't have station watermarks, V-chip logos, banner ads, etc.

(I recognize that I am new here, but I assure you I am *not* new to sourcing TV from the net. I remember when 800 MB MPEG-2 SVCDs at 480 x 480 were the best format available, and DVD rips were the holy grail.)

Maybe we are looking at different shows, or releases from different groups, but I have found virtually no issues at all with the quality of WEB-DLs from the groups OP mentions (KiNGS, NFHD, ECI, NTb, BS, etc.) and basically never encounter things such as OOS, glitches, missing minutes, included commercials etc.

Hello Gear-x and welcome to the forum Image

My own opinion of Web-DLs has improved since I first responded in this thread a year ago. It is now the standard by which I judge Scene-captures.

The difference in file size is no longer as great as it used to be and the improvement in quality is sometimes quite striking. They're a bit easier to find than they used to be as well.

One slight drawback though is that matching English subtitles are still quite hard to come by, most being synced to the Scene releases. Also they're sometimes incompatible with PS3 playback or AVCHD authoring.

Holy crap, I hadn't noticed how old this thread was. I saw it near the top of the sub-forum it's in, but I didn't realize how few posts there tend to be in here. Sorry for resurrecting an old thread!

... so does the original question need a new answer? Is it the "right time" for a Web-DL search designation? (I will confess, it was my search for such a thing that brought me here in the first place.)

No need to apologise, resurrecting a thread is better than duplicating it :)

My opinion on web-dl has changed as well. I used to get all sorts of playback issues and frame rate fuckups but recently rippers seem to have the hang of it. I still typically get the TV rip cos it's often the first available

This section of the forum is a hangover from the days when the name of new releases were posted in here. It's no longer used for that purpose and starting new threads in this section is generally discouraged.

It still has its uses though.
